Health Instruction Permission Slips
Permission slips for health education instruction were sent home on Friday on a salmon colored piece of paper. Please read through and complete the form at the bottom. These must be returned May 27th.
Donuts with My Main Character
Please join us on Tuesday, May 17th for our Donuts With My Main Character Event. This will be on the playground beginning at 7:45. Younger siblings are welcome to attend. Students can choose to bring either a parent, a grandparent, or any other special adult in his/her life. We do ask that students only bring ONE adult Main Character along.
News Team Applications
As a reminder, if your child is interested in being part of Brown School’s Best News Team, applications are due Tuesday, May 17th to Mrs. Berry. Late applications will not be accepted.
Library Books
If your child received a yellow slip indicating a missing library book, please work on locating and returning it. Mrs. Berry, our media specialist, is busy working to inventory all books.
Lansing
We will be heading to Lansing THIS Thursday May 19th. You will need to have your child to Brown between 7:00 AM and 7:15AM. Please drop your child off at the NORTH DOORS (this is the entrance closest to the 4th grade classrooms off of Yukon Dr.). The bus will leave around 7:30AM.
Please make sure your child has a filling breakfast on the morning of the trip. Here is a list of a few things your child will need to bring with them:
2 small snacks. One for the trip to Lansing and one for on the way back
A healthy sack lunch – please pack in a sack so that it is all disposable. We won’t go back to the bus and the less to carry the better. Also, don’t over-pack that lunch!
A jacket for the weather
Comfortable shoes
Here are a few extras your child may want to bring (optional):
Camera
Money for the gift shop ($20.00 MAX)
ONE electronic game and/or a book. These things SHOULD NOT be passed around the bus. This is at your discretion. Teachers will not be responsible for lost or broken items.
All of these items should be in a backpack with their lunch and snacks. Students will have to carry their pack with them all day, so it should not be too heavy. Students are personally responsible for all of their belongings!
We plan to be back to school before the busses leave so your regular departure routines should be fine. However, in case we get delayed, you and your child should have a plan B. Be sure they know what number they should call to get a ride home.
Upcoming Classroom Project
I have partnered with Berrien County Animal Control (BCAC) to work on a project to help them get some of their long time resident dogs and cats adopted while also having our 4th grade class practice their writing skills! Each student will be assigned an adoptable pet and will create an original art piece depicting the adoptable animal and then will use what they've been learning during our writing lessons this year to create a written bio. BCAC will hang their art piece and writing on the animals kennel at the shelter and will also be featuring them on their social media outlets to get the word out about these amazing animals.
Here is where I could use some help. If you have paint (watercolor, washable, etc), paint brushes, oil pastels, colored pencils, etc. we are in need of some to create our art projects. Thank you so much for considering a donation towards our project!
Brown Elementary Art Show!
If you were unable to attend the opening, this art show will be on display at Brown School until Wednesday, June 1st. Please make sure you stop by to see your child’s work before the 1st of June during after school hours. Thank you for all your hard work. We are very proud of YOU and your success in art!
I have updated our classroom wishlist on Amazon with some snacks; thank you so much for donating to our classroom! The kids really enjoy having a snack to grab at recess time if they do not have one. You can click HERE to access our classroom Amazon Wishlist. If you'd prefer to send in a box of snacks with your child for our classroom snack reserve, please feel free to do so.
Water Bottles and Snacks
This is a friendly reminder that students should come to school with a full water bottle each day; while students can fill their water bottles at the bottle fillers, the water fountain remains off.
Students are also encouraged to bring 2 healthy snacks each day, one for morning recess and one for afternoon recess.
Computer Charging
We've unfortunately been getting a little lax about charging computers and students are not prepared for the day's learning. We appreciate your support in reminding your child that computers are to be charged in the evenings at home every night.
Homework Reminder
Homework each night consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year. Students can also work on Lexia Core 5 and on IXL (NWEA Skills).

What we are learning this week:
You can view some materials to help you support our child's learning during unit 6 by CLICKING HERE.
ELA/Writing: We will begin work on poetry. We will analyze poems by looking at structure and figurative language.
Science: This week we will delve further into how our eyes work, exploring the function of the iris and pupil. Your child will add a part to their eye model (the one they created last week) and will experiment to see how the pupil affects vision. One thing you can do to support your child's curiosity is to sit down together and look at pictures of animals’ eyes. If you have a pet at home, like a cat or dog, use the flash of a camera to snap a photo, and see if you can spot the pet’s colorful green layer at the back of the eye. This layer helps these animals to see better at night. Invite your child to share with you what they’ve learned about this!
Social Studies: We will continue our study of government where we will study the question: What powers does our government have? We will look at the following ideas:
- In the United States, the government is based on the idea of popular sovereignty which means that the ultimate power belongs to the people in our government.
- The people agreed to delegate some of their power to the federal government and expressed this in the Constitution.
- All other powers not given to the federal government in the Constitution are reserved to the states or the people.
- In a few cases, certain powers like making laws and collecting taxes are shared by both federal and state governments.
- The system of delegating, reserving, and sharing of power explained in the Constitution serves to limit the power of government.
