 Homework Reminder

Homework each night consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year. Students can also work on Lexia Core 5 and on IXL (NWEA Skills).

What we are learning this week:

Math:  This week students will extend their understanding of multiplicative comparison to situations that involve larger quantities and larger multipliers including multi-step word problems.
You can view some materials to help you support our child's learning by CLICKING HERE.

ELA: We will circle back to our reading comprehension skill of summarizing.

Writing:  We will continue work on our persuasive essay.

Social Studies:  This week we will explore how the culture of a place is influenced by geography. We will examine how people have adapted to different environments in the United States by looking at housing styles, recreational activities, and land use in different regions.

Science: This week, we will examine how important electricity is to our lives. It’s used to power everything from toasters, elevators, and stop lights! We will investigate how electrical energy can be stored in batteries, how it flows through conductive materials, and we will create our own LED flashlights!

You can provide your child with even more examples of ways that electricity is used in your home:

- Take apart a few battery-powered items, such as TV remote controls, digital cameras, or wristwatches to look at the different kinds of batteries found inside.

- Ask children to search for devices plugged into electrical outlets around the house. How many things are plugged in?

This is also a good time to discuss electrical safety, such as never sticking anything besides a plug into an outlet and never using electrical devices near or in water.

In a future lesson, we’ll explore how electric outlets work and where they get their energy from!

P2: We will study the character strength, love of learning, "You master new topics on your own or in school.” CLICK HERE to check out the P2 for Families site to build a P2 routine at home, too. [Password: P2]. It's an excellent resource for guiding important character conversations at home.
