Week of February 7 - 11

Valentine's Day Celebration

We will have our Valentine's Day Celebration on Monday February 14 from 12:30-1:45!  We'll be making Valentine's Day bags in class this week to collect our cards; due to space constraints in the classroom, please do not send in an additional bag or box for your child to collect Valentine's in.

If your child would like to pass out Valentine's Day cards to the class on Monday February 14, you can access a list of students first names HERE; please ensure there is one for each student if you are sending them in. If you are in need of Valentine's Day cards for your child to pass out, please contact me before Thursday February 10 so I can get some extras for you.

Please feel free to send in Valentine's Day cards on either Friday February 11 or Monday February 14 and we can keep them here in the classroom for the party.

Kindness Squad

Hello Families of Mrs. Hassenger’s class,

In P2, we have been learning about giving and we wanted to do a project where we deliver treats to

classes and teachers around the school. We need your help! In order to give to others, we are in need of

some candy and snacks. We would like to do something different every week or two so Mrs. Hassenger

will update the list of what we need in the blog each week.

Here is a list of what we will need this week so we can deliver treats to each classroom:

-Starbursts

-Skittles (fun sized bags)

-M&M (fun sized bags)

-Kit Kats

-Jolly Ranchers

Thank You,

Mrs. Hassenger's 4th Graders

Dressing for the Weather

As winter continues, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.  All students are expected to be outside at all 3 recesses and often times during P.E. Students will not be allowed to play beyond the blacktop without boots and snow pants. If your child is in need of a winter coat or any other winter apparel, please let me know.

Please talk to your students about their responsibility in wearing what you send/expect them to wear during recesses. Brown School is focused on teaching personal responsibility/natural consequences for student choices. For instance, if their pants get wet going down the slide when they chose not to wear their snow pants, they will be sitting in wet pants for the day. We will not call home for dry clothing.

Homework Reminder

Homework each week consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year.

What we are learning this week:

Math:  This week we will continue working on breaking down multi-digit numbers and writing them in expanded form. We will also complete section B and have our check point on Thursday before moving on to our next section. You can view some materials to help you support our child's learning by CLICKING HERE.

ELA: Our genre study on Pourquoi Tales will begin this week. We will talk about their different features and work with our skill of cause and effect within pourquoi tales.

Writing:  We will continue work on our persuasive essay by generating topics this week. Students will begin brainstorming of topics and create pro and cons list to their ideas.

Science:  This week we continue our study of roller coasters as we solved the mystery, “Why is the first hill of a roller coaster always the highest?” Your child will learn about how the first hill gives the coaster the energy it needs to go through the whole track. Since hills can’t give enough energy to climb a higher hill, the first hill has to be the tallest. The same idea applies to swinging at the playground. You can support this week’s learning by taking your child to the park, pulling them back on the swing and letting them go. Before you release, you can ask your child, “will you swing back and crash into me if I stand still? why not?” Then try adding energy by pushing your child and talk about what happens. Have fun!

Social Studies:  We will continue our study of human geography.

P2: We will study the character strength, Humility, "You do not seek the spotlight. You let your actions speak for themselves."
