Dressing for the Weather

As winter approaches, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.  All students are expected to be outside at all 3 recesses and often times during P.E. Once the snow begins, students will not be allowed to play beyond the blacktop without boots and snow pants. If your child is in need of a winter coat or any other winter apparel, please let me know.

Please talk to your students about their responsibility in wearing what you send/expect them to wear during recesses. Brown School is focused on teaching personal responsibility/natural consequences for student choices. For instance, if their pants get wet going down the slide when they chose not to wear their snow pants, they will be sitting in wet pants for the day. We will not call home for dry clothing.

Homework Reminder

Homework each week consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year.

What we are learning this week:

Math:  We will continue working on fractions and will explore hundredths and tenths.

ELA: We will focus on comparing and contrasting in text.

Writing:  We will continue our study of prefixes and suffixes and parts of speech.

Science:  This week in science we will continue our geology unit about rocks. Your child will learn about landslides and how a steep slope plus rain can cause broken rocks to tumble and cause real damage. Your child will brainstorm solutions for preventing landslides, keeping people safe, and protecting property. We will solve the mystery, “How can you survive a landslide?” You can support this week’s learning by picking a problem that your family is encountering and brainstorming solutions with your child. Examples of problems could be how do we do X? How can we prevent Y from happening? Take a few minutes to write down some ideas together. Remember, when you’re brainstorming, there are no bad ideas! After you’ve generated some ideas, discuss them and decide which idea you think has the most promise.

Social Studies:  We will finish our unit on geography of the United States.

P2: We will study optimism.  Optimism means, “You expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.”
