Holiday Spirit Week this week!

Our classroom winter party is this Friday! Thank you to the families who signed up to help at our party; we are all set for volunteers.

Winter Break Challenge

Later this week, I'll be passing out a fun little "winter break challenge" for students to participate in over winter break if they would like. This isn't an assignment but rather something fun to do over break.

Dressing for the Weather

As winter approaches, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.  All students are expected to be outside at all 3 recesses and often times during P.E. Once the snow begins, students will not be allowed to play beyond the blacktop without boots and snow pants. If your child is in need of a winter coat or any other winter apparel, please let me know.

Please talk to your students about their responsibility in wearing what you send/expect them to wear during recesses. Brown School is focused on teaching personal responsibility/natural consequences for student choices. For instance, if their pants get wet going down the slide when they chose not to wear their snow pants, they will be sitting in wet pants for the day. We will not call home for dry clothing.

Homework Reminder

Homework each week consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year.

What we are learning this week:

Math:  We will continue to practice adding and subtracting fractions.

ELA: We will focus on the text structure, sequence of events.

Writing:  We will continue our study of prefixes and suffixes.

Science:  This week in science we will continue our geology unit about rocks.  Your child will learn about weathering, the process when solid rocks break into smaller pieces.  This can happen when plant roots grow into cracks or when freezing water expands in small cracks, exerting tremendous force on the rock to break into pieces.  Students will also investigate how tumbling rocks can wear down and break apart by shaking sugar cubes.  We will solve the mystery, “Will a mountain last forever?”

Social Studies:  We will continue our unit on geography of the United States.

P2: We will study self-control. Self-control means, “You have the ability to control your emotions and behaviors. You think before you act.”
